In his time at the station, he's covered everything from last August's catastrophic derecho to flooding, droughts and blizzards. He began working at the station in 1994, departed in 1998 to be the morning meteorologist a Salt Lake City TV station, then returned to KCCI in 2000. He was named chief meteorologist in 2016 after predecessor John McLaughlin's departure for health reasons. KCCI News Director Allison Smith said in a separate statement that as a broadcast meteorologist, Gertz "has poured his energy and expertise into keeping people safe." Meanwhile, as the station seeks a replacement, "We’ll take any days with Kurtis we can get,” he said. "We were sad that he wanted to leave, but understood that he wanted to go off and do something different, and we don’t know what that is,” Sather said. We think he’s been incredible with our group of folks in terms of leading our team, and leading our coverage both on normal days and also during severe weather. “We love Kurtis, and he’s been an incredible leader to our team. Sather said in a statement to the Des Moines Register. “Kurtis came to us a while back and mentioned that he wanted to step away from meteorology,” KCCI General Manager Brian D. During his tenure at KCCI, he has won awards including Seals of Approval from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association and multiple Emmys. Gertz, the station's Storm Team 8 chief meteorologist, is departing in May, the station said.
